Bryan Veloso Tells the Story Behind Mark Zuckerberg’s ‘I’m CEO, Bitch.’ Business Card

Kofesto Technology: Mark Zuckerberg’s “I’m CEO, bitch.” business card story still manages to get the limelight, even after 6 years following the launch of the book, The Accidental Billionaires. Bryan Veloso, the interaction designer at Facebook back then, recalled his experiences in a Quora reply.

One of the many Zuckerberg stories is about his legendary business card, “I’m CEO, Bitch”. The Social Network story is very real and the screenwriter Aron Sorkin took the original transcript from Zuckerberg’s LiveJournal blog which was used word-by-word, except the name of his girlfriend which was changed to Erica Albright in the movie. But that doesn’t play any of the roles in Zuckerberg’s “I’m CEO, Bitch” story.

“I designed the original Facebook business cards” – wrote Bryan Veloso in his Quora reply, who currently titles himself as Partnered Broadcaster at Twitch. “It’s been almost 10 years since I designed them, so I’ll recall this as best as I can.”

Bryan was the interaction designer at Facebook in 2005. He, along with Aron Sittig, was assigned the task to make business cards for the team, comprised of a handful of nerds back then. He could easily recall the talks he had with the “aggressive” Mark. Like Steve Jobs, the Chinese-speaking Facebook CEO was quite honest with his admirations about Jobs.

“It was during one of those meetings where I remember him first uttering the phrase, “I’m CEO, bitch…”

These business cards were designed right after Facebook saw a name-change from “TheFacebook”. Bryan referred such designs as “happy accidents” and thanked his close relationship with Zuckerberg that made him comfortable to use the phrase – “So, quite simply, it was a phrase I typed in that stuck.”

However, The Social Network has shown an entirely disparate version of the story. In the movie, Napster founder Sean Parker, played by Justin Timberlake, was the one who gave that idea to Zuckerberg – “This time you’re gonna hand them a business card that says, ‘I’m CEO, bitch!’ — that’s what I want for you,” Parker says in the movie. A few minutes later, Zuckerberg was occupied with a box of “I’m CEO, bitch.” business cards.

The two versions of the story might have faced a cross-over at some time. Conceivably, it was a knee-jerk reaction that Zuckerberg uttered the phrase “I’m CEO, bitch.” in front of Bryan after hearing it from Sean Parker. The Social Network was an adaption of “The Accidental Billionaires”, penned down by Ben Mezrich, who sourced the content from the conversations he had with co-founder Eduardo Saverin as Mark Zuckerberg refused to make any contribution.

According to Bryan, these cards were a felicitous portrayal of the culture of a company led by a hoodie guy, back then. Eventually, the cards retired and then there were new ones, representing a more matured version of Facebook – “Their replacement reflected the changes a young Facebook needed to go through in order to be where it is today.” – wrote Bryan.

Kofesto Technology : Facebook overtook the oil giant Exxon Mobil on Monday to become the fourth most valuable company in the world by market capitalization. After Facebook had made the cut into the top list, all the four top companies in the list of the most valuable companies are the tech giants.

Faceook has surpassed the oil company Exxon Mobil to become the fourth most valuable company in the world by market capitalization.

According to recent market trends, there are two reasons which have been attributed to this rise:

Surge in the market value of the world’s largest social networking company due to increasing income as more and more Facebook users are joining this social networking site and,
Declining in the market price of the oil and layoffs in the oil giant Exxon

The four tech giants which top the list are: Alphabet (Google), Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook.

After Facebook had gone online in the share markets, many investors at the Wallstreet had raised a finger about the capability of Facebook over making money from the internet users. Unlike other top three companies, Facebook mainly relies on its website.

However, ever since then, Facebook has not looked backward and now, it is seen as the rare fast-growing technology company that is capable of beating Wall Street predictions in terms of revenue growth.

Apple, the number one the list for the last 13 years, was not able to gain the first position. Despite its more than $200 billion cash pile, investors still are not convinced enough that Apple has a bright future ahead.

On February 5, 2016, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) will deliver its decision. If WGAD finds the detention unlawful, Assange could be a free man. The WikiLeaks founder is also expected to be “released immediately and compensated.”

After receiving a political asylum from Ecuador in August 2012, for the last 3 years, Assange has been forced to stay in the South American country’s embassy in London. He took this step after receiving threats from the federal agencies and calls for assassinations from politicians.

It should be noted that in the States, he fears heavy cyber espionage charges for publishing classified US military and diplomat documents in 2010, the largest data leak in the American history. The information pertained to the secret Trans-Pacific Partnership pact, US military conduct in Iraq and Afghanistan, and documents the CIA director.

In the past, Assange was accused of unlawful coercion and sexual assault in Sweden. From Sweden, Assange fears that he would be extradited to the US.

In September 2014, Assange filed a complaint in the UN against Sweden and the UK, that is currently under consideration. He submitted an immediate request for relief to the United Nations WGAD regarding the arbitrary nature of the detention. The decision of this case will be announced on Friday.

If WGAD announces the decision in his favor, the UK and Sweden will be immediately called on to release him.

Bill Gates Tells How He Hacked His School’s Computer To Meet Girls

Born into a professional family, Bill Gates created one of the biggest software companies in the world. Computers intrigued him from an early age and he utilized his expertise to hack into his school’s computers to meet girls.

Bill Gates needs no introduction whatsoever. After all, he co-found Microsoft and is currently the richest person in the world. In 2000, he also launched the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that has donated more than $34 to the projects aimed at social welfare.

Gates used his first computer at a private school in Seattle. There, he wrote his first computer program aged just 13. It was the same Lakeside School where Gates met Paul Allen and became friends over a shared love of computers. You must have heard the famous story that tells how Gates hacked into his school computer to meet girls. In a recent interview with BBC, Bill Gates sheds more light over this story and tells how he enrolled himself into the classes where he was the only boy.

He and fellow Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen hacked and make changes into school’s scheduling software to up Gates’ chances of getting a grade. “Paul did the computer scheduling with me. Unfortunately for him, he was two years ahead of me and he was off to college by then,” Gates says.

“So I was the one who benefited by being able to have the nice girls at least sit near me. It wasn’t that I could talk to them or anything — but they were there. I think I was particularly inept at talking to girls, or thinking, ‘OK — do you ask them out, do you not?’ When I went off to Harvard I was a little bit more sociable. But I was below average on talking to girls.”

He became the world’s youngest self-made billionaire by 1987 with a $1.25 billion worth. These days Gates is focusing primarily on philanthropy and inspiring billionaires to sign the Giving Pledge.

Bill Gates was asked to choose the 8 records he’d take with him to a desert island, here are his choices

This Sunday, Microsoft co-founder and world’s richest man, Bill Gates appeared on BBC Radio 4’s long-running “Desert Island Discs” show.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which eight unmissable pieces of music would you want to take with you?

That’s what the BBC asked Gates.

The program invites guests to select the eight records they would take with them were they to be cast away on a desert island.

Talking to Kirsty Young on Radio 4’s “Desert Island Discs,” Gates shared his list in a rare personal interview. He goes through his musical choices, explaining their links to the people and the moments that changed his life.

The castaways also choose a book and a luxury item.

Here’s are the records, book, and luxury item that Gates selected and why.

“Under Pressure,” David Bowie and Queen
Gates said: “In my 20s and 30s I worked a lot, but a few Fridays and Saturdays we’d go out and dance, so this kind of reminds me of those disco days with a bit of weekend freedom.”

In the early years of Microsoft, he took little time off and didn’t go in for vacations, Young heard. Gates said he knew he should be careful not to judge fellow workers by his own standards.

“I knew everybody’s license plate so I could look out the parking lot and see, you know, when people come in. Eventually, I had to loosen up, as the company got to a reasonable size.”

“Blue Skies,” Willie Nelson
This was his favorite of the picks said Gates. He surprised her the night before his wedding to Melinda with a special performance from Nelson on a beach in Hawaii.

“My wife Melinda and I love Willie Nelson. So as a surprise gift for her, I had him show up the night before we got married. We were on a beach in Hawaii, and he kind of walked down the beach with his guitar, and I said, ‘Well, here he is, let’s have this guy sing some songs for us.’”

Paul Allen, who had gone to the same high school as Gates, was the other co-founder of Microsoft. Gates said of this song: “Because I was younger [Paul Allen], would sometimes taunt me with the title of this song — “Are You Experienced” — because I hadn’t gotten drunk or other various things, so this is one of our favorites.”

Gates said: “When the [Bill & Melinda Gates] Foundation was just getting started around 2000, Paul [Allen] told me that I should meet Bono. And I didn’t prioritize it because I thought a musician is not really going to understand this global health stuff. But we finally did get to meet and I was amazing about he had thought about it, read about it, so it started a partnership, and he’s been absolutely amazing.”

“Two of Us,” The Beatles
The Beatles track reminds Gates of arch-rival Steve Jobs, whose company Apple Inc. battled it out with Microsoft for dominance in the personal computer market.

Gates said he chose this song because Jobs mentioned it when the two famously gave a joint interview not long before the Apple founder’s death.

“Steve was really into music, and he loved the Beatles, and so did I. And he actually mentioned the song, ‘Two of Us,’ saying that was kind of like this journey we’d been on where we’d been competing and working together.”

“How Can Love Survive,” from “The Sound of Music”
Gates said he chose this song because “Melinda and I both love “The Sound of Music,” and as I met [investor and philanthropist]Warren Buffett, he and his first wife Susie sang a song from “The Sound of Music.” In fact, this is one we’d never heard because it was in the Broadway musical and not in the movie. It’s kind of a cute song, so Melinda and I think of this as one of our favorites.”

Currently on Broadway, Gates said this song appealed because: “It’s about a young person saying, ‘Hey, I’m going to take a risk. I’m going to get out there and try and do something new and different.’”

His choice of book was: “The Better Angels of Our Nature” by Steven Pinker

In his analysis, Pinker, a Harvard professor of psychology, argues that over the centuries, people have gradually become much more humane, as the civilizing effect of manners, regard for others and self-restraint takes effect.

In a blog post on his favorite reads of 2012, Gates says the nonfiction is “one of the most important books I’ve read—not just this year, but ever.”

Gates selected the Collection of Lectures DVD from The Learning Company as his luxury item. He said “I suppose asking for an Internet connection is outside the rules.”
